Well, its finally here.
I got a grand total of 2 hours of sleep, but it was worth it.
No birds on the ground yet, but I had a fantastic time in the woods. I tried a new piece of public land today, and was pleasantly surprised to have several hundred acres all to myself. I must have hiked over 3 miles.
I did not hear or see any woodland poultry, but I did have a very close encounter with a large coyote. That was pretty cool.
A few thoughts and reflections after the morning hunt:
1) Try to do most of your run & gun early in the morning before the dew evaporates. That little bit of moisture on the dry leaves makes a huge difference when trying to be sneaky.
2) Carry less crap. I have a horrible habit of over packing. I do it year after year, and I tell myself to stop again and again. So, one more time – CARRY LESS CRAP!
3) Buy tick/insect repellent. Lyme disease is no joke, and I plan to go to the doctor tomorrow to make sure I’m clean. I’m not thrilled about missing a day of hunting, but I’d rather not mess up the rest of my life…
